Travis Kelce is bringing his investment portfolio home to Cleveland. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end announced Wednesday that he has purchased a minority ownership stake in the Cleveland Guardians, joining an ownership group led by chairman Paul Dolan and partner David Blitzer.
The Cleveland Heights native made the announcement on his "New Heights" podcast with brother Jason, describing the investment as a childhood dream realized.
"This is some of the coolest stuff I've ever been a part of," Kelce said. "The childhood memories, the jumping on the Rapid (light rail line) with the family or my friends in high school going down to a game, just buying a program with Dad when I was younger and keeping score of the game. There are so many countless memories of the '90s and then early 2000s where it's in me to always root for the Guards and always want to be a part of them."
The 11-time Pro Bowl tight end emphasized his deep connection to Cleveland's east side, where he grew up before his football career took him to the University of Cincinnati and eventually Kansas City.
"This is a way that I can always cement myself back into the east side of Cleveland, man," Kelce explained. "It's a dream come true for a Cleveland kid. Any Cleveland kid would be through the roof right now, and I'm happy to be the honorable one to get to do it for us."
Following Mahomes' Investment Playbook
Kelce's move into MLB ownership follows a path already established by his Chiefs teammate Patrick Mahomes, who owns a minority stake in the Kansas City Royals and co-owns the NWSL's Kansas City Current. Both players also share ownership in the Alpine Formula One Team, demonstrating their expanding business interests beyond football.
The Guardians are currently valued at approximately $1.7 billion, according to ESPN, representing an increase from the team's $1 billion valuation in 2022 when David Blitzer acquired his equity stake. Blitzer holds an option to purchase a majority stake in the team after the 2027 season.
Dolan and Blitzer released a joint statement welcoming Kelce to the ownership group: "Travis Kelce knows what it takes to win at the highest levels and he's exemplified that throughout his playing career and in the way he shows up as a community leader and businessman. He cares deeply for Cleveland and Northeast Ohio and is committed to supporting our mission of building out a world-class organization that helps uplift the communities we serve."
Maintaining Cleveland Connections
Despite spending his entire NFL career in Kansas City, Kelce has maintained strong ties to Cleveland. He has thrown out the first pitch at Guardians games and recently returned to the city with fiancée Taylor Swift to attend Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals, supporting the Cleveland Cavaliers at their downtown arena near Progressive Field.
The investment represents more than just a business opportunity for Kelce, who has consistently promoted his Cleveland roots throughout his podcast and public appearances. His brother Jason regularly joins him in reminding listeners of their Ohio origins at the start of each episode.
Kelce acknowledged that his professional commitments have limited his ability to return to Cleveland as frequently as he would like, making this ownership stake a meaningful way to maintain his connection to the city that shaped him.
"I haven't been able to get back to Cleveland as much as I've always wanted to," Kelce said. "This is a way that I can always cement myself back into the east side of Cleveland."
The announcement comes as Kelce continues to expand his business portfolio while maintaining his elite performance on the field. The tight end shows no signs of slowing down either his football career or his investment activities, with this Guardians stake representing his latest venture into professional sports ownership alongside his Chiefs teammate.
